Whenever a significant awards ceremony nears, there’s always a demand for the addition additional classifications to recognize overlooked contributions and delight the hearts of followers who have specialized interests.
A fellow writer previously argued supporting a scary games classification. That would rule. The same goes for strategy board titles, representing someone's personal cause. However, I must insist if I try to elbow in front just as with other blinkered fanatics, there's a strong justification for why my demand stands as crucial and significant. This is the request: It's essential to create a classification for brain-teasing titles.
The Genre Classification Challenge
Organizing artistic expressions is not a science; it remains highly personal, and inevitably generate discussions concluding with vague boundaries. There’s a reason film award organizations steer clear of genre categories. But it is an unavoidable compromise within the realm of gaming, that demonstrate such variety it's challenging to consider them one unified medium.
To recognize the complete range of interactive entertainment excellence to be recognized, while allowing diverse titles to have a chance for representation, genre categories are essential.
Current Gaming Award Categories
The major gaming awards offer these classifications covering Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Between them, these six categories effectively encompass numerous genres, and you can find room for numerous titles.
Not so for puzzle games. No appropriate category exists for their placement. Think about these outstanding current releases, all very different: building puzzles in a particular game, fast-paced pattern recognition from another release, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles from additional release. Where could they possibly go within current classifications? Nowhere, that’s where.
Recognition Challenges
There are dozens outstanding logic titles published annually lacking appropriate categories during gaming ceremonies, except when they manage to fit classification types such as Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested Indie races.
- An iconic brain-teaser received no recognition completely that year
- Another imaginative release was excluded in 2019
- Well-received sorting experience got ignored recently
- Just some puzzle games barely qualified for small studio or handheld classifications
Value of Brain-Teasers
These are often compact experiences, however the design behind logic titles holds tremendous importance. Famous handheld logic titles count as the most-played games in the world and have been for over a decade.
The iconic tile-matching title rivals well-known building titles competing to become highest-selling title ever; it’s also in the running for best game of all time. Puzzle games are foundational to the art of video games, and engaging across multiple categories.
Recommendation and Reasoning
Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter this problem. One could readily select five nominees engaging, different, qualified experiences every year with ease — or rather, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave so many good games out.
And to reiterate, these include experiences without proper classification during prominent ceremonies. Puzzle game makers operate at the hard edge of video game design, developing some of the purest expressions within interactive entertainment. Comparable to movie stunt professionals, they merit acknowledgment. We shouldn't delay generations.
