British Air Force Typhoon jets have operated alongside France's air force in a joint strike on an hidden munitions depot in Syria operated by the Islamic State group (IS), according to the UK's MoD.

The location, located using surveillance, was thought to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the release indicated, and was located in hills just north of the ancient city of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our fighter planes used precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to hit a several approach shafts down to the depot... early reports indicate the target was engaged successfully," the MoD said.

There was no indication of any civilian casualties in the operation on Saturday evening and each participating jet returned to base without incident, the ministry further stated.

The British jets were backed up by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

IS - alternatively referred to as Daesh - established jihadist rule over significant areas in Iraq and Syria prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This operation demonstrates the UK's leading role, and determination to work closely with our allies, to eradicate any re-emergence of the terrorist group and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the area," UK Defence Secretary the minister stated.

UK warplanes have carried out patrols over Syrian airspace to "forestall any attempted comeback" of Islamic State subsequent to its military defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I want to thank every member of our armed forces participating in this mission for their skill and their valour," the Defence Secretary said. "Including them were thousands of UK service members stationed over the festive period. This operation, to take out dangerous terrorists who endanger our security, highlights how British military are always on standby, throughout the year, ensuring Britain's security at home and influential overseas."

In December, the American forces executed what it described as a "large-scale strike" against Daesh sites in the country, following an ambush claimed the lives of two American soldiers and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The U.N. reports IS still boasts between 5,000 and 7,000 combatants in Syria and Iraq.
